WWE SmackDown Live’s last stop before SummerSlam PPV event is WWE Battleground 2017, which is one of those white bread WWE PPV’s where there’s no real gimmick to it. It’s just a cool name. The PPV started back in late 2013 and has had some less-than-stellar main events since then. Who can forget Daniel Bryan and Randy Orton battling it out for a vacant WWE Championship only for a crying Big Show to cause a no contest by punching everyone? Or Brock Lesnar squashing Seth Rollins for a while until Undertaker teleported into the ring to kick Brock in the jimmy?
At least last year’s Shield triple threat was pretty rad, even if it happened amidst the Roman Reigns wellness violation, which made it weird.
Anyway, this year’s show!
WHEN IS WWE BATTLEGROUND 2017?
The show will take place on July 23, 2017 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Show begins at 8pm ET with the Kickoff at 7pm.
WWE Battleground matches :
Jinder Mahal (c) vs. Randy Orton (Punjabi Prison Match) :
Orton’s second rematch with Mahal will be in match that has only been held twice before. There will be two steel-enforced bamboo cages with weapons in between, and the winner will be the first man to escape both structures.
Prediction: Randy Orton retains
John Cena vs. Rusev:
Cena returned on July 4 and immediately reentered another feud with Rusev. They will compete in a flag match, which had some relevance on Independence Day but none three weeks later at a PPV(pay-per-view).
Prediction: John Cena wins
SmackDown Live Tag Team Championship
The Usos (c) vs. The New Day:
This rivalry has been great to this point, and I don’t believe it has much chance in slowing down. This may be an opportunity for New Day to win the titles, continuing the feud through to SummerSlam.
Prediction: New Day wins the TAG championship
No. 1 Contendership for SmackDown Live Women’s Championship
Charlotte Flair vs. Becky Lynch vs. Natalya vs. Lana vs. Tamina Snuka (Fatal 5-Way Elimination Match): Enjoy the concept of the match, though it’s quite similar to how Raw decided the No. 1 contender via gauntlet match a couple weeks ago. Naomi will once again fail to defend her title against legitimate competition.
Prediction: Charlotte Flair Wins
Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Baron Corbin
This was somewhat expected, but after Corbin attacked Nakamura on SmackDown and Nakamura responded in kind, it is set.
Prediction: Nakamura wins
WWE United States Championship
AJ Styles (c) vs. Kevin Owens:
AJ Styles won the U.S. title at a MSG house show just three days after becoming the No.1 contender. That puts this match officially up in the air. Kevin Owens gets a rematch At WWE Battleground, a still-seething Kevin Owens will challenge United States Champion AJ Styles in a rematch for the prestigious star-spangled title.
Prediction: Styles retains
Matches in italics are projected and not made at this time
Sami Zayn vs. Mike Kanellis
With Zayn accidentally interrupting the couple twice in as many weeks and being attacked this past week, it sure feels like this will be a rivalry carried through to the PPV. Perhaps on the kickoff show.
Prediction: Mike Kanellis
Mojo Rawley vs. Zack Ryder
Despite the excessive amount of tag teams being split up in WWE, the writing appears to be on the wall with these two. Mojo had some success on his own, Ryder returned from injury, they immediately failed to put a dent in the tag champs, and now there’s some animosity over Mojo eliminating Ryder from the big battle royal.
Popular names likely off the show: Women’s champion Naomi, Dolph Ziggler, Carmella, Breezango
