The next WWE pay-per-view event is ‘Payback. The first pay-per-view after WrestleMania is always a key one, and that certainly looks like it will be the case this year. After WrestleMania 33, we have a new Universal Champion, and a few new storylines are beginning to develop, including The Hardy Boyz as Raw Tag Team Champions. Now, we’re starting to get an idea of what the Payback card will look like. One of the matches was officially announced on ‘Monday Night Raw’ this week, but it actually seems as if that match is already off. As always, the plans are subject to change over the course of this month, but these are the matches that we should currently expect to take place at WWE Payback. (WWEdotcom)
WHEN IS WWE PAYBACK 2017?
The show takes place on April 30, 2017 at the SAP Center in San Jose, California.
WWE PAYBACK 2017 MATCHES
KEVIN OWENS (C) VS. CHRIS JERICHO
United States Championship
Half a year ago, Kevin Owens and Chris Jericho were best friends. Kevin Owens then showed his true colors in the lead-up to Fastlane, when he destroyed Chris Jericho and declared that he no longer needed him. Chris Jericho cost Kevin Owens his Universal Championship against Goldberg, leading to a WrestleMania showdown where Chris Jericho defended his United States Championship against Kevin Owens. Kevin Owens just barely made it out the winner, thanks in part to being able to escape a critical pin via touching the nearby ropes with one finger.
The next night on Monday Night Raw, Chris Jericho announced the rematch for Payback. Unfortunately, Kevin Owens and Samoa Joe then jumped Chris Jericho and put him through a table, causing Chris Jericho to sit on the shelf for a bit. I imagine he’ll be recovered enough to take part in the PPV, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this is his last hurrah for a while.
Neville (c) vs. Austin Aries
Singles match for the WWE Cruiserweight Championship
On the WrestleMania 33 pre-show, Neville defeated Austin Aries to retained the Cruiserweight Championship. On the April 4 episode of 205 Live, Aries won a fatal four-way #1 contenders match to earn a rematch. On the April 10 episode of Raw, it was announced that the rematch would happen at Payback.
Randy Orton (c) vs. Bray Wyatt
At WrestleMania 33, Randy Orton defeated Bray Wyatt to win the WWE Championship. On the April 4 episode of SmackDown Live, Wyatt and Erick Rowan lost a match against Orton and Luke Harper. On the April 10 episode of Raw, Wyatt announced that he was coming to Raw due to the “Superstar Shake-Up”, but was still allowed his rematch for the WWE Championship and announced that he would face Orton in a House of Horrors match at Payback.
House of Horrors match for the WWE Championship
The Hardy Boyz (Jeff Hardy and Matt Hardy) (c) vs. Cesaro and Sheamus Tag team match for the WWE Raw Tag Team Championship
At WWE Payback, glory will meet power head-on as Raw Tag Team Champions The Hardy Boyz go to war with former titleholders Sheamus & Cesaro.
WWE PAYBACK 2017 RUMORS
We’re likely to get some kind of The Guys Roman Reigns vs. Braun Strowman match. On the Monday Night Raw after WrestleMania, Braun Strowman confronted WWE Universal Champion Brock Lesnar and said that when Braun Strowman crushes Roman Reigns it will put Braun Strowman on Brock Lesnar’s radar. Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a gimmick match of some sort, such as Last Man Standing.
The Kings Layer, Seth Rollins vs. Samoa Joe is likely in the sense that it was supposed to have happened at Fastlane, but Rollins mucked up his knee before they had a chance. Rollins took down Triple H, meaning we’ve probably seen the last of him for a while, but we’re probably going to see more go down between Rollins and the goon that put him on the shelf.
